The Brno Exhibition Centre welcomed participants of the 6^th Central European Veterinary Congress today, which focuses on antibiotics policy, its vision and the real situation in veterinary practice. The two-day congress is usually attended by veterinarians, but also farmers, representatives of professional associations, researchers, manufacturers of veterinary drugs and students. The speakers who spoke today at this two-day expert meeting at the Congress Centre also included representatives of major institutions - Koen Van Dyck of the European Commission and Declan O 'Brien from IFAH-Europe.

The congress was opened by Alfred Hera, Vice-Rector of the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University in Brno, who spoke on the topic of drug policy and health and also outlined a legislative framework that influences the work of Czech veterinarians at the national and European levels. The introductory speech was followed by other speakers who presented the current strategy of the European Union in antibiotic policy and talked in detail about the new legislative measures, which should enter into force in the next three years. They also focused on the antibiotic policy strategy of pharmaceutical companies in the Czech Republic and the priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture in the use of antibiotics in animals. Other key topics of the Congress included models of monitoring and addressing antimicrobial resistance and also training and readiness of graduates for practice.

"The antibiotic policy in relation to health care for animals is a current topic affecting a wide range of human and animal life. The issue of microbial resistance is monitored on a daily basis in human and veterinary medicine. An indispensable role in this process is held by the responsibility of a veterinarian and breeder using antimicrobials in indicated cases, especially in food animals. The Central European Veterinary Congress is an opportunity for meetings of competent institutions deciding on drug policy at the European level, in ministries, governmental professional administrations of human and veterinary medicine, including professionals, research, monitoring, diagnostics, veterinary practitioners and farmers," agreed the organizers of the congress, which is held by the Brno Exhibition Centre in the accompanying programme of ANIMAL VETEX in cooperation with several institutions, in particular the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University Brno, the State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic and its partner organizations, Czech and Slovak Chamber of Veterinarians, the Institute for State Control of Veterinary Biologicals and Medicaments in Brno and other organizations.
