International Fair of Agricultural Machinery

Year of Family Farm

In the presence of the Minister of Agriculture Marian Jurečka a meeting of farmers including representatives of family farms was held at the Brno Exhibition Centre. Interest in the topic was confirmed by completely filled hall of the Congress Centre. The meeting of family farms was organized by the Association of Private Farming, which also introduced four key events in 2014. The first of these - Farm Festival at the Galloway Family Farm of the Vacík family will be held on 26 April.

The Galloway farm became the winner of the Farm of the Year competition last year. The Vacík family are dedicated to breeding nearly three hundred pieces of beef cattle of the Galloway and Shorthorn breeds and manage 225 hectares of mostly grassland in organic farming. Their contribution to landscaping is also significant in the form of three owned ponds. Activities of the family farm include the operation of modern slaughterhouses, cutting plants and a meat shop, and a guest house.

According to the President of the Association of Private Farming Josef Stehlík, the biggest problems of the Czech agriculture and rural areas include the fading of village life, severed ownership relations, intergenerational problems, devastated landscape, soil erosion damage, low quality food and lack of job opportunities. "We will discuss these issues during four meetings. We want to find solutions for the unique role of the Czech farmer in the country and society," said Josef Stehlík.
