Javelin's Versatility Allows One Weapon to Multiple Missions from Multiple Platforms

Javelin continues to evolve as the world’s most versatile and lethal close-combat weapon system. The shoulder-fired anti-tank missile is advancing to platform mounted capabilities, offering the warfighter a highly mobile, combat-proven weapon.

Javelin’s platform launch capability further illustrates the versatility of the existing Javelin weapon system. Platform deployment can apply to a wide variety of ground, air and maritime platforms.  For this use, the standard (unmodified) configuration round is integrated onto a Remote Weapons Station (RWS) or manned/unmanned turret using a modest integration kit.  The kit consists of an electronics interface unit, cables and mechanical fixturing. Standard RWS and vehicle/platform sensors, displays, controls and power sources are used for system support.

Javelin has been integrated onto numerous platforms and vehicles for demonstration/testing and is in service on several platforms and tactical ground vehicles with U.S. and allied forces. Vehicle use includes the U.S. Army “Stryker” Brigades.

Javelin’s optimized trajectory, automated guidance and high penetration capability provides unparalleled lethality against heavy and light armor, and a wide array of “soft” and irregular targets. The system can effectively engage targets from 65m out to 4km using it’s patented “fire-and-forget” missile guidance technology. An infrared seeker enables day/night all-weather operations that, together with sophisticated signal processing and tracking/guidance algorithms, provides high accuracy precision engagements as well as robust counter-measure resistance for the modern battlefield environment.

Javelin’s light weight and “soft launch” feature enables safe use from enclosed spaces for dismounted employment and minimizes potential impacts to deployment from platforms. Combined with its flexibility and unencumbered fire-and-forget guidance, Javelin provides exceptional performance in the urban environment.  Javelin’s fire-and-forget operations also provides the capability to do “shoot-on-the-move” engagements, a capability that has been successfully demonstrated. Investigations are currently underway to completely define the operational envelope for these capabilities.

Javelin will remain in the U.S. Government inventory until 2050 and is currently undergoing spiral upgrades to reduce weight and cost while improving performance. Javelin’s field ready capability has been well documented and demonstrated over many years of combat operations. Javelin has maintained an extremely high operational readiness rate and engagement success rate over a wide variety of operational environments. These include operations at high and low altitude, as well as extreme adverse weather conditions.

ABOUT JAVELIN

First deployed in 1996, Javelin is the world’s most versatile and lethal one-man-portable and platform-employed anti-tank and multi-target precision weapon system. To date, more than 45,000 missiles and 12,000 Command Launch Units (CLUs) have been produced. The Javelin weapon system has experienced numerous technology insertions since its initial fielding to stay ahead of advancing threats.

Javelin, which is produced by a joint venture between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, has been used extensively and to great advantage in combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq.  Over 5,000 engagements have been successfully conducted by U.S. and coalition forces. The Javelin Joint Venture is an award-winning enterprise recognized in 2015 by the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense for its outstanding achievements in providing operational support to warfighters with the highest level of mission success and tactical operational readiness.
