HM Government UK Transition

Following the end of the transition period and the new rules that were introduced from 1 January 2021, further changes are due to come into effect from October 2021, January, March and July 2022.

haulier handbook  published by the UK Government is available online in 17 different languages. Acting as a one-stop-shop for UK and EU hauliers, the handbook provides key information and advice on these changes.

To ensure they have the right documentation to cross the EU border, drivers can also complete a free border readiness check at one of the UK Government’s 'Information and Advice Sites'.

There is also a Digital Platform which supports hauliers to become border ready and provides direct access to a Live Chat Team, where agents can support hauliers in Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and English.

Free COVID testing for hauliers is also offered at the majority of the 'Information and Advice Sites'.

From 1 October 2021, National ID cards will no longer be accepted to enter the UK unless  drivers meet certain criteria. Hauliers will therefore need to present a passport to come to the UK.

There will be further changes to export and import movements, including:

  • Pre-notification requirements for Products of Animal Origin (POAO) and High-Risk Food Not of Animal Origin (HRFNAO) will be required from January 2022
  • Prenotification requirements will be required for low-risk plants and plant products from January 2022
  • EXS Safety and Security Declarations will be required from 1 July 2022
  • Physical SPS checks for POAO, HRFNAO and high-risk plants and plant products will be required from 1 July 2022 and will take place at Border Control Posts
  • From March 2022, checks at Border Control Posts will take place on live animals
